Mental Health Awareness Week offers an opportunity to highlight the work of organisations that support vulnerable people in our communities, and the vital role inclusion plays in protecting and improving mental wellbeing.

One such organisation is The Befriending Scheme,

a local charity dedicated to supporting adults with learning difficulties or mental health needs who may feel isolated or lonely. Loneliness is a serious issue that affects mental and physical health, especially those facing social challenges.

The charity works by carefully matching volunteers with individuals with shared interests to benefit from regular companionship and support. They visit or talk regularly, providing consistent social contact. The charity also runs community hubs where members can meet, join activities and learn new skills. All these actions help to reduce feelings of isolation, boost confidence, and encourage participation in community life. The Befriending Scheme’s work is a lifeline for many who might otherwise struggle alone.

One of their community hubs is the Red Rose Community Farm, located at Lindsey Tye on part of the Heathpatch estate. Their aim is to provide a welcoming outdoor space where people can engage with nature, interact with animals and build social connections in a relaxed, supportive environment.

What Happens at Red Rose Community Farm

Gardening and Farming Activities: Participants help grow vegetables, herbs and flowers, learning practical skills and enjoying the therapeutic benefits of working with plants. Their produce is sold at the farm gate or at local farmers' markets, bringing in much needed funds.

Animal Care: The farm includes donkeys, alpacas, goats, sheep, chickens and guinea pigs, offering opportunities for gentle interaction and learning responsibility.

Workshops and Events: Educational sessions on sustainability, cooking, and crafts take place, encouraging creativity and learning.

Social Gatherings: The farm acts as a community hub where people can meet others in a relaxed, natural setting.

Spending time outdoors and engaging in routine, purposeful activity as part of a team supports mental health by reducing stress and promoting a sense of achievement. The farm’s peaceful environment also encourages mindfulness and connection with the natural world.
